Ask The Experts: Jenny's Cakes
An exclusive interview with Jennifer Stirling of Jenny's Cakes.
Jenny, what questions should a bride-to-be ask their cake designer and what information will they need?
One of the first questions should be how far in advance does the cake have to be ordered? Most weddings take place from May through to September - the crazy wedding season! You should consider booking your cake at least 6 months and up to 1 year in advance for these dates; other months should be okay from 3 to 6 Months in advance. Book your date; you can decide nearer the wedding date on the final design; the timescale for final decisions may vary from designer to designer.
Are there any questions frequently asked by engaged couples?
One question frequently asked is, "does it have to be fruit?" The answer is no, it doesn't have to be fruit! Most cake designers will offer a range of different types of cakes. In a few cases this range may be dependent on the design of the cake. So remember to ask what type of cakes they provide!
With so many different cakes how do they decide on the size they need?
Well, we would ask them a series of questions. For example, what size and how many cakes do you want? This is normally based on the number of portions required. This in turn depends on:
- How many guests are you having?
- Do you want to keep a tier of fruit cake?
- Are you having a party afterwards where you want to provide more cake?
- Do you want to send cake to family or friends who won't be at the wedding?
If you give your cake designer an estimate of how many pieces you will need, they should be able to guide you as to the size and amount for cake you will need.
What about gluten free products? Are they an option when it comes to wedding cakes?
If you really need a specific type of cake e.g. gluten free do ask about cakes for guests with special dietary needs; any good cake decorator should endeavour to provide this where at all possible.
With so many choices and designs available, is anything possible?
Your wedding cake is a focal point of the wedding reception and thoughtful selection of the design and colour will enhance the occasion. For novelty cakes, ask how much customisation is undertaken: are they willing to create your design? When looking at more traditional cakes, ask about the different types of flowers available: will they make the type and colour you want? Be sure to let them know if you have a particular side design in mind!
For the chocaholics amongst you dreaming of a chocolate wedding cake, ask yourself if you want to use the cake as dessert? Check this out with the reception venue first, as some charge for serving.
All of the above can be discussed in depth with your cake designer. No idea is too crazy!
